CHAN: Despite the presence of multinational warships, Somali pirates have hijacked at least three more vessels since the hijacking of the Sirius Star supertanker over the weekend. The supertanker owners are now reportedly negotiating with the pirates. STORY: The ones who didn't get away - these men are accused of being pirates. The eight Somalis were brought before a Kenyan court in Mombasa to answer charges of piracy. They were captured earlier this month by the British Navy following a firefight at sea which left two suspected pirates dead. Their arrest represents a drop in the ocean. The explosion of piracy off Somalia this year has seen of scores of ships hijacked in the Gulf of Aden, sending insurance premiums sky-high. Saturday's spectacular capture of the Saudi supertanker, the Sirius Star and her 100 million dollar cargo of oil outside Somali waters, demonstrates an increasing boldness of the pirates, who are estimated to have made 30 million dollars in ransoms this year. That's small change if Somali reports are to be believed, which suggest the hijackers of the Sirius Star are demanding $250 million dollars for the oil-laden tanker and her 25-strong crew. Speaking in Rome, Saudi foreign minister Prince Saud al-Faisal confirmed the ship's owners had opened negotiations with the pirates - despite official Saudi reservations. [Prince Saud Al-Faisal, Saudi Foreign Minister]: "I know that the owners of the tanker, they are negotiating on the issue - we are going to join the task force that will try and eradicate this threat to international trade." Despite a large international naval presence off the Somali coast, the hijackings continue. At least three more ships have been seized since the Sirius Star's capture.
