Lisa M. Diamond, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Psychology and Gender Studies in the Department of Psychology at the University of Utah. She has won a number of awards for her work. In 2000, Dr. Diamond published a study, "Sexual identity, attractions, and behavior among young sexual minority women over a 2 year period." This study was distorted by the so-called ex-gay therapy group NARTH. They claimed that Dr. Diamond's work shows that sexual orientation is "amenable to change." Dr. Diamond also produced a second study, "Female Bisexuality From Adolescence to Adulthood: Results From a 10-Year Longitudinal Study" in Developmental Psychology (2008, Vol. 44, No 1., 5-14). NARTH recently cited this study to support its anti-scientific belief that homosexuality is a mental disorder that should be treated. Truth Wins Out informed Dr. Diamond about this misrepresentation of her research, and she agreed to discuss how her work was manipulated by NARTH. To see further right wing cherry picking, misquoting, misrepresentations and flat out distortions of genuine science, please visit www.RespectMyResearch.org.

Several dozen people demonstrated outside the DFW Airport Marriott, where the National Association for Research & Therapy of Homosexuality (NARTH) held its annual conference. Members discussed the use of therapy to suppress someone's homosexual desires. The message from the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender groups protesting the events is that homosexuality needs no cure because it is not an illness and that attempts to convert gays is destructive and based on quack science.

On Planet Narth, we use Very Conventional Therapy to address Underlying Issues. This brief training clip illustrates our conventional techniques.

Dr. Russell is a member of the APA's task force charged with revisiting guidelines for treating gay and lesbian clients, which makes her an expert in her field and highly qualified to speak on the subject of reparative therapy. Dr. Russell points out that every mental health and medical organization has rejected ex-gay / reparative therapy because being gay or lesbian is not a mental illness thus not something that can or should be "cured." Furthermore she states the body of professional literature and research on sexual orientation indicates ex-gay therapy is ineffective and harmful.

Brian Nesbitt grew up in a religious household. He went to NARTH-affiliated therapist Dr. Chris Austin (later convicted of sexually abusing clients). When Brian couldn't change, Dr. Austin introduced him to "rubber band therapy." After this failed, Dr. Austin tried aversion therapy, using ammonia. Brian escaped the "ex-gay" horrors and has gone on to live as an out gay man.
