Here is a real treat for mridangam conoisseurs. One of the greatest mridangists in history. His technique very different from Palghat Mani Iyer. Here he plays a solo in Adi Taalam from a concert in 1959. It is a very old clip so turn the volume up or use ear phones.

Another video for mridangam lovers. This is from the album 'Laya Tharangam'. TVG plays Adi Taalam using his own unique mridangam which sounds different from traditional mridangams. Apparently he has added alot of Iron on the Valanthalai (treble) side and created a more resonating thoppi (base). I am not too sure of the details but it results in a more metallic sounding mridangam. TVG style is particularly interesting and sounds very modern and 'jazzy' at times. I was even told that TVG uses a technique where he deliberatley misses beats throughout most of the solo and adds them on at the end. See if you can spot it. Unusual sound and technique and it adds a new flavour to mridangam. I personally love it. Audio and Photo used for educational purposes only
