Aug 2007 So many people have defected from North Korea that the government is now building a wall along the Chinese border. This exclusive report follows one family's dangerous exodus. At a safe house in China, a brother and sister collapse into each other arms. For months, 'Uncle Jung' has been trying to smuggle his sister and her family out of North Korea. Today, they crossed the Tumen river into China. "We wanted to wait for darkness but were afraid the guards would find us", explains Park Myong Kwan. "So we just jumped into the river". One risky journey may have ended for the Park family but another is just beginning. China regularly returns refugees to North Korea where they face almost certain execution. In contrast, Thailand deports immigrants to South Korea. Over the next week, the Parks will travel by any means possible to the Lao border, a journey of 4,000 miles. They don't speak Chinese and don't have any documents. "We feel like we're lying on a chopping board right now", confides Park Myong Kwan. "It's like we're gambling but the stakes are our lives". But for them, the gamble pays off. They make it to Thailand before being arrested. In a few months, they will be flown to South Korea, where they can build a new life.

This is a story about a girl who's forced to live as a stranger in Korea, enduring racial prejudice. Tasha (korean name- yoon mi rae) is half African American and half Korean. as she grew up, she had a hard time searching for self identity. Yeah, korea was a sort of narrow minded society colorwise. The situation is getting better though, i think it's still not better enough. feel sorry for her and ashamed for this :( Go Tasha!! U ROCKS!! * Black Happiness by Tasha My skin was dark from my past People used to point at me Even at my mom Even at my dad who was black, and in the army People whisper behind my back Said this and said that I always had tears in my eyes Although I was young I saw my mother's sadness Everything seemed like it was my fault Because of my guilt I washed my face everytime during the day With my tears I melt the white soap I always hated my dark skin why O why Does the world judge me When I hate the world I close my eyes I put my soul into the music my father gave me I feel the volume And fly higher and higher Far away la musique (When I hate the world) (Music soothes me) (you gotta hold on) (and love yourself) (When I hate the world) (Music raises me up) (so you gotta be strong) (you gotta hold on) (and love yourself) Time passed and I was thirteen My skin was dark brown Music doesn't judge color They give me light I lead my music We lean on eachother I don't feel lonely Then one day I was given a chance I held on to my microphone And suddenly I was on stage I say goodbye to music and ask it to come back Then I became nineteen I have to lie I put white makeup over my face They told me to wear a mask They said my mom's race was okay But not my dad's Every year my age was nineteen During times when time stopped I felt like I was in jail And I leaned on myself I spent endless, painful days I ignored their warnings And because I missed music I tried to escape But no, I got caught I prayed all night And now I'm free - posted by love0hateu * More About Tasha http://shenyuepop.com/tag/yoon-mi-rae/

Al Jazeera's Tony Cheng has a special report for The Listening Post from perhaps the most closed country in the world: North Korea. Despite the destabilising effects of rumours about the health of their Dear Leader, Kim Jong Il, international condemnation over their nuclear programme, and a dysfunctional economy that has brought mass starvation to its people, the DPRK maintains a status quo of near total media lockdown. Although a trickle of outside media have been allowed in recently, as Tony's piece illustrates, what they see only offers a fleeting and superficial glimpse of life inside the so-called 'hermit kingdom'. And finally, Barack Obama is the US president-elect. Our Video of the Week this week sees the boys from the iconic 'Wassup' beer commercial of 2000 reunited eight years later, on the cusp of a new era.

January 2003 North Korea may have expelled the UN nuclear observers but it remains keen to welcome tourists. We go undercover in Pyongyang, where the shoddy tourist façade fails to conceal a much darker reality.
