"I don't know what this song is about. When I was writing this I was going through a divorce. And the only thing I can say about it is that it's obviously in anger. It's the angry side, or the bitter side of a separation. So what makes it even more comical is when I hear these stories which started many years ago, particularly in America, of someone come up to me and say, 'Did you really see someone drowning?' I said, 'No, wrong'. And then every time I go back to America the story gets Chinese whispers, it gets more and more elaborate. It's so frustrating, 'cos this is one song out of all the songs probably that I've ever written that I really don't know what it's about, you know."

November 20th, 2008 at 15:19:32 good quote by phil
November 20th, 2008 at 15:42:31 He was angry. The drowning reference is obviously anger - "well, if you told me you were drowning, I would not lend a hand". That is just referring to the explanation of how angry he is - he hates the person so much that he would ignore pleas for help. He did state that he had no specific event of any kind when he wrote this song.
November 20th, 2008 at 16:05:30 Great Song, possibly the best ever. Collins said that he is amused at the American "urban legend" that resulted from this song. It had nothing at all to do with drowning. (or murder, or adultery or boating or any other thing) He said, although he really didn't write it with anything in particular in mind, he was dealing with a recent divorce.

November 20th, 2008 at 21:04:17 The true story of the song....phil's dad was drowning in the beach when he was a little kid and the guy that he is writting the song to, watched his dad drown without trying to help him. Phil wrote this song and invited the guy to his concert, where he played this song for him, as he sat in the first row. That's the story of the song. Look it up, it's the real story of the song.
November 20th, 2008 at 21:27:16 i think phil had psycological problems in that period when he wrote this song.He tried to stab and drown himself but his ego prevented him from doing it
